It's a sign of the times. Police say they're getting more reports of crooks puncturing gas tanks to steal gas. The latest incident happened in Bowling Green. Officers say the thief didn't try to siphon the gas out of a Jeep Liberty, he poked a hole in the bottom of the gas tank to steal the gas. Lieutenant Tony Hetrick says the unwelcome crime is a new fad. Lieutenant Hetrick expects more of these reports to come in and suggests parking your car in well lit areas and keeping an eye on your car.
A sign of peace. This morning the Sylvania Community Services Child Care program will be making a human peace sign at 10:00 a.m. Approximately 80 children will form the peace symbol behind the Burnham Building on Monroe Street. To honor Independence Day all will be dressed in red, white, and blue.
If you're cooking ground beef for dinner, check the packaging first. Kroger says it's expanding its recall of ground beef. Originally the grocer recalled beef with dates between May 31st and June 8th. Now Kroger is expanding that voluntary recall through today's date, July 3rd. It all stems from that E. coli outbreak in Ohio and Michigan. There have been two reported illnesses linked to the tainted beef in Lucas County and one case in Seneca County.
A South Georgia teenager is charged with a dangerous act. Officials say the teen is shown in online video launching a baby several feet across a room. The video posted on YouTube shows the teenage boy putting a baby on one side of an inflatable pillow on the floor. The boy then jumps on the pillow and the baby flies several feet before landing on the floor and crying. The teen's been charged with cruelty to children. There's no word on the condition of the baby.
Today Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner will be discussing the population count in Toledo. The mayor has formed a Mayor's 2010 Everyone Counts committee. The group works to ensure that every resident in the city of Toledo is counted during the 2010 U.S. census count. The mayor's announcement is this morning at 10:15. The Oregon school district has a new leader. Doctor Michael Zalar will make $108,665; that's significantly less than his predecessor who made more than $141,000 last year. He says he wanted to send a message to taxpayers that he's serious about making cuts from top to bottom. Doctor Zalar doesn't have to move. He's spent the last five at principal at Clay High School where he's served as principal for the past five years. He will start his new job on July 14th and says he's ready to get started.
Slumping auto sales are now trickling down to Ohio's auto parts makers, resulting in hundreds of layoffs. Some of the layoffs are temporary while other jobs are being lost for good. Toledo's Dana Corp will temporarily lay off 95 workers. The plant puts together axles and driveshafts for the Liberty and Nitro. General Motors Powertrain Plant in Toledo announced last month that it will close for one extra week this month as part of its summer shutdown.
The state is extending unemployment benefits. 280,000 people are eligible for an extra 13 weeks of pay; that's according to the Department of Job and Family Services. Ohio's unemployment rate was 6.3 percent in May, up from 5.6 percent in April. If you're eligible for the extension you will get a notice in the mail in the next several weeks.
Now another store is gearing up for a grand opening. The Fresh Market plans to open a new location in the Toledo area in the upcoming months and now they're looking for employees. You can find the market on west Central Avenue near the Costco.
Some Michigan jobs may be a little safer tonight. Plastech is selling some of its plants. Johnson Controls, Inc. will pay $135 million for several plants, including two in Frenchtown Township. Plastech makes door panels, consoles, bumpers and other products. It filed for bankruptcy protection in February after Chrysler cancelled its contract with the company.
Operations are back to normal at Los Angeles International Airport after a bomb scare. It stopped traffic and grounded several flights. Police say a man came up to him and claimed to have a bomb. Authorities doused the bag with a water cannon and determined there was nothing harmful inside. The suspect is locked up in an LA jail tonight. Six people are safely on the ground tonight after a hot air balloon accident. It happened in Boulder, Colorado shortly after take-off. The pilot says wind gust blew the balloon into a tree. The crash ripped part of the balloon leaving the balloonists stranded. Firefighters came to the rescue getting everyone out of the tree without anyone hurt.
Pennsylvania police are keeping a close eye on a weigh station after a load of trash dumped overnight. PennDOT crews spent all day cleaning up more than forty tons of trash. They say this is the first time something like this has ever happened and they have no idea why the driver just dumped the load and took off.
